Most of the locals know the hot springs as Sempaya which originated from a Kiswahili phrase Sehemu mbaya (the difficult side) owing to the steep challenging rocks and terrain during the construction of the Fort Portal Bundibugyo road along the ridges of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Kitagata Hot Springs

The hot springs are located on the Ishaka–Kagamba Road, in Sheema County, in Sheema District, Western Uganda, approximately 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) by road southeast of the town of Kitagata.

There are plenty of safari lodges nearby like the Kazinga Wilderness Safari Camp where you can have coffee while watching elephants, buffalos, and even hippos wandering. by. Engiri Game Lodge and Campsite offers free wifi, a family-friendly restaurant serving African cuisine, and wandering elephants.

There are two hot springs adjacent to each other. According to the locals, one of the springs was used by the former Omugabe (King of Ankole) and is known as Ekyomugabe. The other spring is believed to have healing powers and is known as Mulago, after Uganda's largest National Referral Hospital. Some locals drink the water.

Semi-naked men and women bathe in the warm waters of Kitagata Mulago, the spring believed to possess healing powers, sometimes as many as 200 in a day.

Kitagata hot springs has two zones; the one for women and children and the one for men.

During the rainy season, the River Ngaromwenda which supplies water to the springs, floods and causes the Kitagata springs to be warm rather than hot.

Kitagata hot springs contains various minerals. These include potassium chloride, calcium phosphate, magnesium chloride, lithium sulphate, sodium chloride and calcium sulphate among others.

Rwagimba hot springs are famous to the people of Tooro kingdom because its believed that their Kings (Omukama) used to frequent the springs for relaxation and healing. The king’s subjects would lift him up on their shoulders and take him to the springs and the springs were only used by the king and some of the kingdom chiefs with permission.

As repayment to the gods, locals often perform animal sacrifices, and any wishing to visit the site must first get the blessing of the Prime Minister of the Panyimur Chiefdom.
